Life In Colour: Black & Brilliant
A captivating snapshot of poetry, exhibitions, events and art that vividly portrays the experiences of being a Black female born in the vibrant town of Luton.
Through her powerful verses and visual concepts, Naz delves into the rich diversity of Luton, where individuals from various backgrounds grew up together, painting the community in vibrant hues. The poems and art eloquently explore the legacy of mass migration, unfulfilled promises and the enduring impact of historical discrimination, shedding light on the interconnected relationship between identity, heritage and the human experience.
From beige to ebony
Growing up in Luton, Naz reflects on the town’s rich diversity, where people of many ethnicities live side by side in full colour, from beige to ebony. Her work captures the shared experiences of those who migrated from Commonwealth countries, drawn by the promise of a better tomorrow in the UK. It also highlights the disillusionment that followed, as that better tomorrow never arrived for many of their descendants, because of systems that kept inequality and division in place.
“My Life In Colour” is a testament to the resilience and unity that emerged in the face of discrimination, challenging society’s constructs and inviting reflection on the invention of “whiteness” and “blackness”.
