My Promise to Myself
I promise
to speak to myself
as kindly
as I would speak
to any friend who came to my door
shaking.
I promise
to measure my progress
not in miles,
but in moments
I feel safe in my own skin.
I promise
to forgive the versions of me
who stayed,
who went back,
who could not see a way out yet.
They kept me alive
long enough
to become the one
who writes this.
I promise
to celebrate small victories—
sleeping through a night,
laughing without checking
who is watching,
calling a helpline,
stepping into a room
that exists to help.
My past is part of me,
but it is not
the whole of me.
From this day on,
my life belongs
first and foremost
to the person
I am still becoming—
and that person
is free.
